Investigator : The Circle

Technology has greatly impacted today's society. It has been embraced and incorporated into our daily lives so much so that many people cannot imagine life without it. We live in a technology and media-suffused environment marked by access to an abundance of information. One must adapt to this technological reality to thrive in today’s world. It has brought many benefits in medicine, education and the financial sectors. With its many benefits, it has also challenged the value of privacy. Everytime you browse the Internet, your privacy is under constant threat from cybercriminals, governments and corporations who want to get their hands on all personal information as depicted in the dystopian novel The Circle by Dave Eggers.

Throughout the first half of the novel, we are introduced to Mae who has landed a job at the main campus of the world’s most innovative and prestigious tech company, The Circle. In order for Mae to thrive at The Circle, she must demonstrate her ability to adapt to the technological environment she works in while reorienting her values of privacy. The founder of the company, Ty Gospodinov, invented the technology, TruYou, which eliminates Internet anonymity. It serves as and account useful for everything Internet related. “ Anytime you wanted to see anything, use anything, comment on anything or buy anything, it was one button, one account, everything tied together and trackable and simple, all of it operable via mobile or laptop, tablet or retinal.” pg. 22. TruYou can be viewed very poorly considering it eliminates all forms of privacy on the Internet. However, Mae must not question its reliability considering it is the premise of the company’s belief that all technological anonymity should be eliminated.

I used two sources throughout my investigation. My first source was a blog about the evolution of technology. I was not able to find information about the author and considering that it is a .com website, this source is not reliable. However, the information provided on the website enhanced by prior knowledge about the evolution of technology.

My second source is a paper written by two university students of the Ajloun National University, a reputable university in Jordan. One of the students is studying computer sciences and the other english language and literature. There are sources listed at the bottom of their paper confirming their information, proving its reliability.
