Action movies are so fun to watch with family and friends, but when it comes to a scene where Arabs and Muslims are portrayed as bad, people get a lot of questions. The media is also pushing it far by generalizing cases and manipulating people’s mind with fake information that is easily seen as the reality when it’s not.
The movie Taken 2 is basically about a retired CIA agent named Bryan Mills. Him and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper. He finally got killed while rescuing his daughter. Even though Taken 2 is a great movie to watch. It unfortunately kills the whole mood when you see that the enemies are portrayed as Arabs and Muslims with their scary dirty faces and their beards, which by the way has nothing to do about their identity, and also that most of the women in the movie are wearing veils which isn’t the case in modern Istanbul where the movie takes place.
In the article, Alsultany basically explains what happened after 9/11. One of the incident that happened was the fact that the image of Arabs and Muslims was represented really badly. Someone that is Arab was seen as good if they sided with Americans and if it’s not the case the person was seen as a terrorist and a threat. The movie did not précise if it was before, after or during 9/11. But the fact that the producer didn’t show beautiful parts of Istanbul got me interested, he based his knowledge on the movie and that made it disappointing.
To sum up, if we don’t look at the part where the movie was trying to show us a specific image of Turks and Arabs and how awkward the scenes were due to events that were hard to believe the movie. Beside this bad side of the movie, the main actor Liam Neeson was playing his role perfectly.
