"My Octopus Teacher": Forming Relationships with the Natural World

The documentary film, My Octopus Teacher, is about filmmaker Craig Foster’s friendship with a wild common octopus. Foster would go everyday into the same kelp forest to observe a female octopus. He even managed to play with her sometimes. Her unusual nature caught his eye, turning is everyday habit to observe her into an obsession. He perceived her unusualness as a signal of a learning opportunity. In fact, he did learn a lot; the octopus could walk on her tentacles, use shells as shields, create hunting tactics, and even trust a human.
