Culture was fundamental to the goals and operations of the residential schools because the whole point of them was to wipe out indigenous culture and replace it with what was seen as the traditional Canadian culture. They would go in and take them away from their families, abuse them and in general made a lot of them lose their culture and even their native language that they grew up with
