Are professional athletes overpaid?

Money takes a big place in our society and so do sports. Professional athletes can earn millions and millions of dollars. Physically, they're getting pushed to their limits to perform, is it worth millions of dollars though? Let's take firefighters as an example: they are putting their lives on the line to save others and yet, they're still getting paid only about $46,870 per year. If we remove all sport teams in our country, maybe we would mourn the entertainment loss, but imagine if we removed all doctors, firefighters, etc. We would lose a lot of lives.
