For my original digital image, I chose to create a self-portrait inspired by the work of Cindy Sherman. In the article "Ugly Beauty," Parul Sehgal explores the concept of identity through Sherman's photographs. Sehgal suggests that the characters portrayed on the artist's Instagram are "mischievously playing on the fears of female ugliness, of becoming old and absurd or just invisible" (Sehgal). These images she is referring to are ones that Sherman takes of herself and then alters in obvious ways by exaggerating her features and playing with her environment. My intention for this project…
