According to Kimmerer, being an immigrant is like being an outsider, someone who doesn’t really belong to a place. On the other hand, being indigenous is like being native or being someone that possesses a sense of belonging. Thus, by visiting a place that marks us greatly and in which we settle makes us seem kind of rooted to the place. It’s all about learning, experiencing and respecting this environment that we discover. By doing so, we become a part of it, making us indigenous in some type of way. This is what she calls becoming indigenous to a place.
