The Handmaid’s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, is a story about systemic, fascistic control, and especially about the control and ownership of women’s bodies. In this world, fertile women are a commodity; dubbed “handmaids,” and passed around like property to powerful households to be ceremoniously raped and used as surrogate mothers. The story is filled with horribly detailed depictions of rape and a variety of forms of mutilation, causing me to feel a deep sense of violation, a mixture of anxiousness and disgust while reading.
