Hate Crimes in the 20th Century or the Symbolism in "The Flowers"

The short story “The Flowers” tells about hate crimes against African-Americans through the point of view of a little ten-year old girl. Until the end of the story, she is unconcerned by racial problems in the USA in the 20th century, simply because she does not know about them. But she still discovers it by herself, in undelightful conditions. I think the author chose this type of narrator in order to show the absurdity of racism and how no person of colour could escape violation toward himself, even children. When Myop finds it out, her interpretation of the world shutters.
