I have always found Tara and her father's relationship difficult and mentally draining. I know that it’s (almost) every father’s goal to protect their daughter(s) and do everything in their power to raise them “well”, but in the case of Tara, I never felt that energy once while reading the book. Gene has issues and Tara clearly describes them thorough her memoir till she starts reflecting on the idea that he might be mentally ill.
