In my opinion, memory can be tricky. In fact, it is possible to insert and modify someone's memories quite easily. Memory is uncertain simply because if someone denies something that you were sure about, then you will start to doubt those memories and they might event transform. For example, Tara doubts her memories when it comes to Shawn's abuse, because her family says that it wasn't bad. This doubt of memory may also come because it was a traumatic event for Tara.
