Not Your Story? Win the "Appropriation Prize"!

Last May, in Canada’s Writer’s Union magazine article “Winning the Appropriation Prize”, Hal Niedzviecki, argues that we should “imagine other peoples, other cultures, other identities” for he doesn’t “believe in cultural appropriation”. Considering that the magazine edition was axed on the importance of indigenous literature, his statements were extremely ill-perceived. The rebuttal stems mostly from his mention that an “Appropriation Prize for best book by an author who writes about people who aren’t even remotely like her or him” should exist. (Niedzviecki 8)
