Patient Autonomy vs. Medical Beneficence

Medical professionals are constantly exposed to dilemmas. To help with this, they are taught ethics, and hospitals have ethics committees to help them make decisions (Baker et al.). Even with all of this preparation and accessible knowledge, there are still ethical dilemmas in the field. One such dilemma occurs when a patient’s autonomy goes against their health. This paper focuses on how Immanuel Kant, the creator of the ethical theory of deontology, would view this dilemma.
