The reaction of God towards the eating of Adam and Eve’s seems fair from my point of view. God is the reason why they existed; He is the funding of their lives. He only gave them one rule to obey, but they weren’t even able to respect it to show a little gratitude to Him. For me, gratitude and respect are the basis of life. To leave in peace and to grow in a beautiful world, Adam and Eve only had to respect one rule but they just thought about their own selves, their own needs, and their own interests, when they ate from the Tree of Knowledge.
