While the TV show Friends may be one of the most watched and loved shows of the 1990s, it definitely had controversial content. The episode “The One with the Prom Video”, shocked many viewers with the introduction of Fat Monica. Until this point, we were exposed to beautiful, thin women. The portrayal of the “fat” character demoralizes any woman who does not fit the media’s ideal thin image. Using a utilitarian perspective, it can be argued that the introduction of Fat Monica in the TV show Friends is promoting body shaming in women which can lead to great amounts of pain and unhappiness.
