Recently, my friends and I had the opportunity to participate in Champlain’s first-ever hackathon. The event was organized by a third-year Computer Science student, and had a very open-ended challenge (we could make anything we wanted). We decided to tackle the problem of sorting waste into different categories by building an image recognition system for organic and recyclable waste. While it seemed like a simple idea, we realized it benefit society in many ways.
