As was shown in the documentary, the tensions are most straightforward in the legal context of Istanbul. Indeed, it was explained by one of the Sufi that they had to practice their religious rituals underground because they could be sanctioned with more than half a year of incarceration if caught. Take in mind that this was during the 1940’s up until the 1960’s but that the long-lasting effect on Sufi people is that they still feel as if it is forbidden to be openly Sufi in Turkey.
