The Divine Abodes

There are four divine abodes, or “brahmaviharas”, and can also be called the four sublime states. There’s metta, which is essentially a loving-kindness, there’s karuna, which is compassion for the suffering of others, mudita, which is empathetic joy that shares the happiness of others, and finally upekkha, which is imperturbable equanimity. The divine abodes are positive character traits and are to be developed. They mostly focus on individual transformation, though they do have large consequences for social and ecological engagement.
