Alice Walker’s essay, “Am I Blue?,” follows Alice and her companion who rent a small house in the countryside and encounter a horse named Blue. Blue is boarded by their neighbours next door and is occasionally ridden by one of their children. Walker feeds Blue apples to make him happy and in their second year at the house, another horse is put with him and she eventually gets pregnant. However, she is taken back from her owner once the job is done, leaving Blue sad and lonely. In her essay, Alice Walker aims to show readers that animals are treated as objects rather than as living creatures.
