According to David Kingsley, in the concept of deep ecology, individuality is seen as emergent and relational. This means that each individual (human or non-human) has emerged from the ecosystem and merges into it again when they die. Therefore, since "its character and its essence are inexplicable apart from its relations with its environment", no being exists in isolation.
