I think that what Tara meant by it “was its effect” is that the abuse is not meant to physically hurt her on the spot. By abusing her, Shawn is slowly making Tara build a shield around herself. The long-term effects that she will have are as bad as her physical pain. She slowly starts to feel unbreakable since her barrier is growing stronger and stronger. She is losing herself. We still haven't seen the long-term effects of this abuse on Tara.
