The prevalence of discrimination based on race within the government shown by the story “My brother at the Canadian border”

The author uses symbolism in order to show the theme of discrimination based on race coming from within the system without being blatant and too straight forward. She uses the map that is being used by the brother in the story in order to symbolize division and separation. This effect is amplified by the fact that the brother and his friend are at the border, and they were interrogated mainly because of their race.
