Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members’ minds and expectations. These are commonly used in dystopian novels. A typical dystopian trope in novels is grouping. We can observe this in the novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. At the beginning of the novel, we can immediately find groups such as the Marthas, the Econowives, the Commanders, the Commander’s wives, the Unwoman, the Angels, the Guardians and of course the Handmaids.
