Why is the hate crime rate so high for the Muslim Population?

I believe that the hate crime rate is very high when it comes to the Muslim population because of events such as the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001 at the Twin Towers in New York City. Just under 3000 innocent people died and many were left injured for life. This caused great upset and anger in many people.
